SayText is a free web app built and run by developer MinQ.Kim. It exists so you can listen to the things you want to read when looking at a screen for a long time isn't an option.

Why it exists

I wanted to keep reading long texts while driving, working out, doing chores or resting tired eyes. The read-aloud tools I tried only read from the beginning, made it awkward to start in the middle, or sounded robotic.

So I built a tool that shows your text sentence by sentence and reads it in a natural voice from whichever sentence you tap. To hear a sentence again, just tap it; to match the content, change the speed.

How it works

In Microsoft Edge, SayText uses Edge's built-in read-aloud voices: your browser fetches the audio for each sentence from Microsoft's speech service. In Chrome and Safari, we offer a free trial with official Microsoft Azure voices through the SayText server.

Sentences are fetched ahead of time, and long silences at the start and end of each one are trimmed so that playback flows smoothly.

Privacy principles

If you aren't signed in, your texts stay in your browser. Members' texts are kept in their account, and we store only what's needed to run the service. Visit statistics are counted as daily totals only—we don't tell people apart with cookies or IP addresses.

The services we work with (ads, voices, email) and how long data is kept are all listed in our privacy policy.

Get in touch

Questions or suggestions? Use 'Send feedback' at the bottom of the SayText screen. Every message is read and used to improve the service. You can find more of the developer's writing on the developer blog (minq.kim).

Try it right now

Without signing in you can listen to up to 1,000 characters right away. Create a free account to remove the length limit and to upload files, save MP3s, loop passages and pick up on any device.
